Master of Theological Studies About us

Located in Heidelberg’s beautiful old city center right at the foot of the famous castle, the Protestant Faculty of Theology offers an idyllic yet also very open, diverse and welcoming place to study. Heidelberg is a bustling and cosmopolitan university town that is home to more than 30,000 students, of which about 20% are international. English is spoken everywhere. The Faculty buildings are only a few minutes away from the main University campus and library.

Relatively small and intimate, the Faculty of Theology prides itself in offering a real sense of community. Overall, the Faculty is home to about 500 students. Especially among our postgraduates there is a large number of international students. Students know each other, study and worship together and frequently socialize. Professors take a personal interest in their students. 

The Faculty of Theology is one of the leading Protestant schools for the teaching and research of theology and religious studies in Europe. Hence the Faculty offers you the chance to engage with cutting-edge research in a wide range of areas. Among our professors you find internationally respected scholars who have done important work in their respective fields and have ample experience as academic mentors.

Heidelberg ranked 2nd in Germany and 13th in the world for for Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

While we are in the Lutheran and German Reformed tradition, we welcome students from a variety of denominational and religious backgrounds as well as students with no religious affiliation who want to learn more about the Christianity.
